VeeKay viert verjaardag met gridstraf voor de boeg

Zelfs op de verjaardag zit het de kersverse 21-jarige Rinus VeeKay niet mee. De Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur incasseert in de Grand Prix van Portland een gridstraf van zes plekken door een onreglementaire motorwissel. In één seizoen mag een team maximaal vier krachtbronnen gebruiken.

De tweede seizoenshelft is tot dusver geen succes ondanks een prima racesnelheid. Een schouderbeenblessure, meerdere incidenten en problemen met de balans weerhielden VeeKay van goede klasseringen.

De recente resultaten staan in schril contrast met de eerste serie races van 2021. Toen won de Hoofddorper onder andere zijn allereerste wedstrijd in de IndyCar op de binnenbaan van de Indianapolis Motor Speedway en pakte hij een knappe tweede plek in de straten van Detroit.

Zaterdagavond 21.15 uur Nederlandse tijd is de kwalificatie. Zondagavond start de race om 21.40 uur Nederlandse tijd.
