Wickens maakt autosportcomeback na horrorcrash

Mooi nieuws vanuit de Verenigde Staten: Robert Wickens gaat zijn comeback in de autosport maken. De Canadese coureur raakte enkele jaren gelden zwaar gewond bij een Indycar-crash en zit sindsdien in een rolstoel. Wickens heeft nooit opgegeven en keert eind deze maand terug op het circuit.

Wickens was in 2018 bezig met een goed debuutjaar in de Indycar totdat het noodlot toesloeg. Op de Pocono Raceway ging het helemaal mis voor de Canadees. Hij crashte keihard in de hekken en liep meerdere botbreuken op aan onder andere zijn nek, benen en armen. Ook liep hij letsel op aan zijn ruggenwervel en belandde hij daardoor in een rolstoel. Hij gaf echter niet op en ging hard door met revalideren en trainen.

TCR

Vorige jaar maakte hij zijn rentree achter het stuur van een racewagen. Hij bestuurde een TCR-bolide voor het team van Bryan Herta Autosport en kon deze bedienen met zijn handen. De test verliep naar wens en Wickens liet zien nog te beschikken over een flinke hoeveelheid snelheid en talent. Dat heeft ervoor gezorgd dat hij zich kan opmaken voor een comeback in de autosport.

Daytona

Wickens zal namelijk gaan deelnemen aan de 4 uursrace op Daytona. Hij zal hier een Hyundai TCR-bolide besturen voor het team van Bryan Herta Autosport. De race is onderdeel van de IMSA Michelin Pilot Challenge. Hij zal de auto delen met Mark Wilkins, hij kan de auto bedienen met de normale bediening terwijl Wickens via een speciale handbediening de wagen zal besturen.
