VeeKay na mislopen winst in slotfase: "Ik was te conservatief in outlap"

Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout greep net de zege mis in de Grand Prix van Alabama. De Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur startte vanaf pole, maar moest in de laatste stint twee posities toegeven en kwam als derde over de meet in zijn #21 Chevrolet-machine. De 21-jarige blikte terug.

"Het ging heel erg goed, ik lag lang aan de leiding en wist prima brandstof te besparen", laat VeeKay vanuit Alabama optekenen. "Bij de tweede en laatste pitstop was het eigenlijk een soort dragrace vanuit de pitlane en helaas heb ik die verloren. Ik was iets te conservatief met de remmen in de outlap en daar verloor ik tijd, waardoor Pato mij kon inhalen”.

“Zonde, maar normaal gesproken hoor ik de gelukkigste autocoureur op deze wereld te zijn. Het is fantastisch om weer te mogen genieten van een podiumceremonie, want het heeft eventjes geduurd. Al met al was dit een bijzonder goed weekend voor ons en bovenal een veelbelovende start van de belangrijke meimaand", doelde VeeKay op aanstaande Indy 500.

“Het is natuurlijk beter als je ietwat teleurgesteld bent omdat je net tekort komt voor een racewinst, dan dat je ergens achterin de middenmoot finisht. Ed Carpenter Racing heeft zijn zaakjes altijd goed voor elkaar op de Indianapolis Motor Speedway en ik heb ontzettend veel zin om die kant op te gaan."

De wedstrijden op de Indianalopis Motor Speedway hebben absoluut geen windeieren gelegd voor de Nederlander. "Vorig jaar won ik op de Road Course en stond ik op de voorste startrij bij de Indianapolis 500. Laten we eens zien of het dit jaar nog een beetje beter kan!”, besluit VeeKay strijdvaardig.

Als je vervolgens op 15 seconde achterstand gereden wordt, dan lag het echt niet alleen aan die putlap. O'Ward en Palou waren gewoon sneller.

Neemt niet weg dat het een mooi resultaat is van Rinus!

  Precies, als het alleen aan die outlap had gelegen had hij bij kunnen blijven en proberen die plek terug te pakken
