Power rijdt naar poleposition op binnenbaan Indianapolis

Will Power scoorde voor de GMR Grand Prix op de Indianapolis Motor Speedway road course zijn 64ste pole door in de laatste kwalificatieronde toe te slaan. Dit was Powers eerste pole op de weg of op straat sinds de seizoensfinale van 2020 in St. Petersburg, Florida.

De beste ronde van Power was 1 minuut en 9,7664 seconden in de #12 Verizon Team Penske Chevrolet op het 14-bochten, 3.9 kilometerlange parcours. De Australiër was daarmee nipt sneller dan regerend kampioen Alex Palou en teamgenoot Josef Newgarden.

"Deze serie is zo lastig", zei Power na afloop. “Dus, om tegenwoordig een pole te bemachtigen, weet je dat je het heel goed hebt gedaan. En het team heeft geweldig werk geleverd. Ik ben supertrots. Het is lang geleden dat we een pole op een road course hebben gehad. Daar heb ik hard aan gewerkt."

Power is slechts drie poles verwijderd van het evenaren van het all-time polerecord van 67 van Mario Andretti. "Ik voel me zo bevoorrecht om zo dicht bij het te zijn. Om daar te zijn met namen als Mario Andretti en A.J. Foyt is iets wat ik me niet had kunnen voorstellen toen ik mijn carrière begon."

Rinus VeeKay beleefde vorig jaar zijn grootste triomf door de Grand Prix te winnen op de Brickyard. Of de Nederlander opnieuw kan zegevieren, is de vraag. De Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur start als vijftiende.

De race op de binnenbaan van de Indianapolis Motor Speedway is zaterdagavond 21.30 uur Nederlandse tijd en is te zien op Ziggo Sport.

  Gewoon op hard starten en net als vorig jaar een overcut proberen. Zonder verkeer is Rinus ook een stukkie sterker dan in verkeer op koude banden.
