Max Verstappen maakte van 15 mei al een onvergetelijke dag, maar Rinus van Kalmthout voegde daar een extra bladzijde Nederlandse autosporthistorie aan toe. Tijdens de IndyCar-wedstrijd op de binnenbaan van de Indianapolis Motor Speedway, zegevierde de jonge Hoofddorper in 2021 en trad daarmee in de voetsporen van Arie Luyendyk en Robert Doornbos.

The American Dream

De Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur besloot vroeg in zijn carrière te verkassen naar de Verenigde Staten en daar de Road to Indy-ladder te beklimmen, vergelijkbaar met F4, F3 en F2 richting F1. De reden? Meer kans van slagen. Door het succes van Verstappen, was er nog weinig oog voor die jonge Hoofddorper die het wilde gaan maken in de United States of America.

VeeKay - omdat Amerikanen zijn gewone naam niet konden uitspreken - maakte indruk bij een test en werd in het IndyCar-opleidingsprogramma opgenomen. In de US F2000, de eerste trede, werd de Nederlander tweede in rangschikking. De volgende stap in de Pro Mazda werd de jonge coureur kampioen en in de Indy Lights, de laatste horde richting IndyCar eindigde de Nederlander weer als tweede. Zijn raketachtige opmars bleef niet onopgemerkt en VeeKay werd opgepikt door Ed Carpenter Racing. Na twee succesvolle tests, kreeg de jonge coureur van het kleine team een fulltime zitje aangeboden voor 2020.

VeeKay matcht met Indianapolis

Dat de binnenbaan van de Indianapolis Motor Speedway een match is met de #21-bolide, is vanaf zijn debuutjaar in 2020 meteen al duidelijk. Vanwege corona werd daar twee keer een IndyCar-wedstrijd gehouden, mede om de kalender goed te vullen. VeeKay behaalde bij zijn eerste optreden op de road course een vijfde eindklassering en bij de tweede GP op de Brickyard zijn eerste pole en podium. Mede door deze resultaten werd hij Rookie Of The Year en was zijn naam definitief gevestigd. De overwinning van een jaar later kwam dus niet als een verrassing.

Bij de Indy 500, dit keer op de fameuze kombaan, heeft VeeKay al tweemaal zich bij de top vier gekwalificeerd, waarvaan één keer op de eerste startrij. Door een fout in de pitstraat eindigde het sterke debuutoptreden in mineur en werd twintigste. In de laatste editie van 2021 kwam de Hoofddorper als achtste over de streep en deed een periode mee aan het front. 29 mei aanstaande kan VeeKay het opnieuw proberen om in de voetsporen te treden van Arie Luyendijk, die twee keer de historische wedstrijd op zijn naam schreef.
