Gateway na kwalificatie decor van clash tussen titelkandidaten

Op voorhand belooft de Bommarito Automotive Group 500 op de World Wide Technology-kombaan van Gateway een waar spektakel te worden. De grootste kanshebbers op de titel starten namelijk allemaal vooraan bij de allerlaatste ovalrace van 2022.

Will Power, de nummer een in de stand, start voor de 67ste keer vanaf poleposition. Daarmee evenaart de Australiër het all-time record van Mario Andretti. Naast de Australiër staat recent Indy 500-winnaar Marcus Ericsson. De Chip Ganassi-coureur uit Zweden stond geruime tijd aan kop in het klassement, maar staat nu derde met 438 punten.

Op de tweede startrij vinden we tweevoudig kampioen Josef Newgarden. De Amerikaan is de teamgenoot van Power en is vierde in de tussenstand met 428 punten. Naast Newgarden is Scott McLaughlin, die ook rijdt onder de vlag van Penske en de zesde positie heeft in het kampioenschap met 392 punten.

Achter Newgarden en McLaughlin starten twee Chip Ganassi's, die dus samen met Penske de eerste zes startplaatsen opeisen. Regerend kampioen Alex Palou kwalificeerde zich als vijfde en begint vlak voor de zesvoudig winnaar van de IndyCar, Scott Dixon. Laatstgenoemde is tweede in de rangschikking met maar zes puntjes achterstand op Power met 444 punten in totaal achter zijn naam. Palou staat vijfde met 417.

De top vijf bevindt zich binnen 33 punten van elkaar. Met nog 162 punten op tafel, eerlijk verdeeld over drie wedstrijden, is het kampioenschap allesbehalve beslist. Een zege is 50 punten, poleposition een punt, snelste ronde een punt en meeste rondes aan kop twee punten.

Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout start als 23ste en kan zich opmaken voor een inhaalrace. En met de kans op veel neutralisaties, kan er nog van alles gebeuren voor de Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur.

De race op Gateway is zondagnacht 00:30 uur Nederlandse tijd en is te volgen op een van de kanalen van Ziggo Sport.

  Een sport waarin Ericsson het kampioenschap kan leiden en nog steeds vooraan staat is niet serieus te nemen. De FE heeft een hoger niveau maar dat is niet te zien door het totale gebrek aan snelheid.

  Precies. Andersom, van Indy naar F1, is ook al bewezen dat het niveau een heel stuk lager ligt. Michel Adretty bakte er niets van in de F1 terwijl het een held was in de Indy.
