Newgarden slaat toe op Gateway met vijfde zege van 2022

Josef Newgarden gaat door zijn overwinning op de World Wide Technology-kombaan van Gateway zeer tevreden huiswaarts. Naast dat de Amerikaan voor het eerst vijf zeges boekte in één seizoen, nadert de tweevoudig kampioen leider in de stand en Penske-teamgenoot Will (482) Power tot drie punten (479). Met nog twee races te gaan nadert de titelstrijd een zeer spannende climax.

De race op de short oval van circa twee kilometer lang, beloofde vooraf een interessante te worden met alle zeven kandidaten van voren. Toch stal debutant David Malukas na een lange regenpauze de show door zich op te werken naar voren. De Dale Coyne Racing-coureur pakte na het zwaaien van de witte vlag plaats twee af van titelkandidaat Scott McLaughlin, die eieren voor zijn geld koos en derde werd. Malukas zag Newgarden voor, maar kwam een aantal rondes tekort voor zijn allereerste winst.

De andere titelkandidaten eindigden allemaal in de top tien. Power finishte als zesde en kende een hachelijk moment met voormalig F1-coureur Takuma Sato op het rechte stuk. Ze toucheerden elkaar lichtjes, maar met de hoge snelheden op een oval kan dat desastreuze gevolgen hebben.

Zesvoudig kampioen Scott Dixon, de overwinnaar in Nashville twee weken terug, kwam als achtste over de meet en zakt een plaatsje in de tussenstand naar P3. De Nieuw-Zeelander heeft 468 punten op de teller. Zijn Chip Ganassi-teamgenoot Marcus Ericsson werd zevende en volgt hem op drie punten (465). De Zweed verloor ook een positie in de rangschikking

Regerend kampioen Alex Palou, McLaughlin en Arrow McLaren SP-rijder Pato O'Ward doen theoretisch nog mee voor het kampioenschap, maar dan moeten de voorste vier veel punten morsen.

Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout viel uit door een elektrisch probleem en werd hierdoor 26ste en laatste. De Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur blijft elfde in het kampioenschap en heeft nog steeds zicht op de top tien.

De voorlaatste race is op het permanente circuit van Portland. De Grand Prix of Portland is op zondag 4 september. Precies een week later is de slotrace op Laguna Seca.

Die 7 man battle is nu 4 man geworden. Eigenlijk met Ericsson de enige nieuwe titelkandidaat. Newgarden en Dixon staan er eigenlijk elk jaar wel weer. Ben benieuwd naar hoe dit zich ontvouwt.
