Power met podium naar tweede IndyCar-titel uit carrière

Will Power is de nieuwe IndyCar-kampioen. De Penske-coureur behaalde zijn tweede titel door bij de Firestone Grand Prix of Monterey naar het podium te rijden. De Australiër finishte op Laguna Seca op P3, achter de dominante winnaar en uittredend kampioen Alex Palou en Penske-teammaat Josef Newgarden.

Power startte de slotrace voor de 68ste keer vanaf pole, een unicum in de geschiedenis van de IndyCar. Veel vrees voor de titelconcurrenten had de 41-jarige coureur niet. Voordat de groene vlag zwaaide, had Power 21 punten of meer voorsprong op Scott Dixon, Newgarden, Marcus Ericsson en Scott McLaughlin en de kanshebbers vormden ook geen bedreiging door hun startposities in het midden -en achterveld. Alleen pech kon Power van een titel houden.

Een neutralisatie vlak voor de helft van de race, zorgde voor wat reuring. Het gehele veld mocht een pitstop maken voordat de Safety Car de baan op kwam. Palou en de van achteren gestartte Newgarden profiteerden hiervan en reden na de hervatting op P1 en P2. Power had het eventjes moeilijk en consolideerde zich op P3. Maar doordat teamgenoot Newgarden op een alternatieve strategie was gestapt, schoof de Penske-rijder weer een plekje op.

Nadat Palou en Power waren binnen gekomen voor hun laatste stop, reed Newgarden zo hard als hij kon op de softs. De tweevoudig kampioen zou in ronde 74 van 95 zijn laatste stop maken. Hij kwam voor Power de baan op met een fikse achterstand op koploper Palou. In het slot zou de top drie niet meer veranderen.

Naast Power won ook een andere rijder een titel. Christian Lundgaard, voormalig F2-coureur, werd Rookie Of The Year en versloeg David Malukas in dit debutantenbal.

Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout liep aan het begin van de Grand Prix achter de feiten aan doordat de Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur een 'elleboogje' kreeg van Devlin DeFrancesco. De Nederlander schoof van de baan en moest van achteren zich naar voren werken.

Uiteindelijk werd de jarige VeeKay veertiende na een sterke come back, maar kon zichzelf dus niet trakteren op een toptienklassering.

Verdiend van Power. Reed gewoon het hele seizoen erg solide, ondanks “slechts” 1 overwinning. En ook dit weekend het pole record gepakt.
Newgarden ook erg goed. Zou de titel ook zeker verdiend hebben met 5 overwinningen dit jaar. Ook een hele sterke recovery race van P25 naar P2. Reed ook echt met het mes tussen de tanden. :)

Power vooral constant en uit d problemen gebleven dit jaar. Nu is Power qua reactie altijd erg moeilijk te lezen, maar ik kreeg een beetje de indruk van "nu is het prima zo"

Die lang gezochte 2de titel is eindelijk behaald, zijn pole record is behaald... nog geen contract getekend volgens mij... 41 jaar inmiddels... ik zie hem zomaar een partime afscheidstour doen volgend jaar.

  Herta is makkelijk uit te leggen. Een ruwe diamant net als Yuki Tsunodo dat iets kalmer moet worden voor zn volledige potentie. En die volledige potentie is bij Herta groot.
  
  Daarnaast een enorme aangang aan amerikaanse fans en dus ook goed voor de blikjes verkoop

  Knalpijp@ Gisteren was niet echt een goed voorbeeld voor hem, maar er zijn races bij dat hij nog dominanter is dan Palou gisteren... als iemand zo'n coureur eventueel bij kan slijpen is het Tost... De potentie in hem is heel groot... het eruit krijgen is alleen heel lastig.
