VeeKay heeft zin in seizoensopener door 'sfeervolle' Sint Pete: ''Echt het stratenrace-gevoel''

Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout staat aan de vooravond van alweer zijn vierde IndyCar-seizoen. Met Ed Carpenter Racing hoopt de Nederlander opnieuw een gooi te doen naar overwinningen, podia en een toptienklassering in de rangschikking. De pas 22-jarige Hoofddorper blikte via de sociale media vooruit op de seizoensopener door de straten van Sint Petersburg, Florida.

St. Pete

''Een coole baan'', begint VeeKay stralend als hij over het stratencircuit. ''Op deze baan maakte ik mijn debuut in the Road to Indy-series. Ik ben daar altijd snel. Een goede atmosfeer, en de eerste wedstrijd van 2023. Iedereen kijkt er naar uit.''

De street course in St. Pete kent viertien bochten en heeft een totale afstand van 2.897 kilometer. De Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur vindt de haakse bochtencombinatie 7-8-9 het leukste gedeelte. ''Het ligt pal in het centrum. Het is erg krap en gaat langs het park. De bomen hangen over de hekken heen. Je krijgt echt het stratenrace-gevoel.''

Concurrentie

Hoewel de wagens van de verschillende teams nagenoeg gelijk zijn qua materiaal, is het toch afwachten welke renstal het maximale uit het pakket haalt. VeeKay zegt hierover: ''Het is spannend om te zien hoe de teams ten op zichte van elkaar verhouden. Wie heeft de meeste progressie geboekt?''

De meeste kanshebbers op de titel komen uit de hoek van Team Penske met onder andere titelverdediger Will Power, tweevoudig kampioen Josef Newgarden en meervoudig IndyCar-racewinnaar Scott McLaughlin en Chip Ganassi Racing met zesvoudig kampioen Scott Dixon, de kampioen van 2021 Alex Palou en Indy 500-winnaar Marcus Ericsson. Ook blijft Colton Herta voor Andretti Racing en Patricio O'Ward voor Arrow McLaren outsiders.

Wanneer komt VeeKay in actie?

De eerste wedstrijd van het 2023 IndyCar-seizoen start zondag 18.00 uur Nederlandse tijd. VeeKay is te bewonderen in zijn goud-witte #21-machine met de Chevrolet-krachtbron achterin. Conor Daly is opnieuw zijn teamgenoot en zal samen met de 22-jarige Hoofddorper een volledig seizoen afwerken. Teambaas Ed Carpenter Racing doet traditiegetrouw alleen de ovals voor de renstal.
