Hoe VeeKay werd beschermd door aeroscreen (2020)

Nadat de Formule 1 de HALO introduceerde, wilde de IndyCar ook hoofdbescherming voor de coureurs. In 2020, het jaar dat Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout zijn debuut maakte, werd het aeroscreen op alle bolides gemonteerd.

Het aeroscreen is een soort vooruit die net als bij de HALO rijders moet beschermen tegen brokstukken en banden die in de cockpit van een ander kunnen binnen vliegen.

Drie jaar terug op Iowa, waar dit weekend ook gereden wordt, liet meteen de positieve werking van het aeroscreen zien. Wat was er gebeurd?

In ronde 157 leek Rinus VeeKay van Ed Carpenter Racing te vertragen achter de uiteindelijke racewinnaar Simon Pagenaud en naar rechts te gaan, en achter de Nederlandse rookie, raakte Colton Herta verstrikt in een accordeoneffect, waardoor zijn Honda nr. 88 over de linker achterband van VeeKay's auto.

Voordat Herta behoorlijk in de lucht kwam, probeerde Herta's onbelemmerde neus - minus de vleugels - in de linkerkant van VeeKay's cockpit te spietsen, ter hoogte van zijn helm. Met het aeroscreen werd Herta's neus omhoog geduwd voordat hij halo raakte en over VeeKay's bolide vloog.

Achter VeeKay en Herta schoten brokstukken van hun auto's in de richting van Marcus Ericsson, maar de brokstukken werden afgebogen door het aeroscreen.

De aeroscreen deed zijn werk en voorkwam letsel of erger.
