Newgarden wint voor vijfde keer in Iowa

Josef 'Mr. Iowa' Newgarden voelde zich als een vis in het water op de korte oval van de Iowa Speedway en pakte voor de vijfde keer daar de overwinning. Teamgenoot Scott McLaughlin zorgde voor een dubbelzege voor Penske. McLaren-coureur Pato O'Ward pakte de derde plaats.

Newgarden won ook vijf van de zes ovale races in de afgelopen 12 maanden, inclusief deze race vorig jaar en de recente Indianapolis 500. Het eigenlijk zes uit zes moeten zijn, mits de tweevoudig kampioen niet was uitgevallen in de tweede race van Iowa.

"Het is een geweldige dag", begon Newgarden. “Mijn team, ze zijn ongelooflijk. Ze geven me altijd een geweldige auto. Ik kom elk weekend opdagen en ik heb het gevoel dat ik het beste van het beste achter me heb. Ik hou van Iowa."

Rinus VeeKay werd zeventiende. De Nederlander knokte zich terug totdat een neutralisatie zijn plannen in het roet gooide. "Ahhhh! Dat geel heeft ons echt genaaid, aangezien we vlak daarvoor een pitstop hadden gemaakt. De top 10 stond weer op de radar, maar had vandaag gewoon niet het geluk, de auto voelde best goed aan!", zei Ed Carpenter Racing-coureur op sociale media.

In de stand blijft Alex Palou fier aan kop en scoorde goede punten door een. P8 Newgarden stijgt naar P2 op gepaste afstand, maar vlak voor Scott Dixon, O'Ward en Marcus Ericsson.

  Ja idd, was jammer, hij lag 4e, en had toen de pech met die caution. Straks idd lekker weer F1 en INDYCAR kijken, een mooi vol weekend weer ! Veel kijkplezier voor vandaag !

  Krijg de indruk dat Rinus niet voor het geluk geboren is, elke race gebeurd er wel iets wat nadelig is voor hem.
  Wordt z’n pitsstop niet verkloot, dan komt wel een neutralisatie weer heel belabberd uit.
  Je zou er zo langzamerhand moedeloos van worden……
