McLaughlin met magistrale ronde naar pole in Nashville, VeeKay P19

Scott McLaughlin verpulverde de concurrentie bij de kwalificatie voor de Big Machine Music City Grand Prix van zondag. In de straten van Nashville reed de Penske-rijder naar een waanzinnige tijd van 1.14.6099 en was meer dan drie tienden sneller dan nummer twee in de McLaren Patricio O'Ward. Voor McLaughlin is dit zijn vierde pole van het seizoen.

"We hebben een fantastisch ronde gereden in Q1 die ons echt op gang heeft gebracht", zei McLaughlin. 'Elke keer dat we in deze wagen zitten, deze Chevy, is ze is echt een killer. Echt trots."

De kwalificatie was uitgesteld vanwege de regenval. Eenmaal van start was de baan kurkdroog met een stralend zonnetje.

Linus Lundqvist, de IndyLight-kampioen die invalt voor de geblesseerde Simon Pagenaud, was de verrassing van de kwalificatie. De debutant stootte door naar de Fast Twelve, maar moest uiteindelijk daar zijn strijd staken en start als elfde.

In de Fast Twelve zorgde Scott Dixon nog voor een rode vlag met luttele seconden nog op de klok. De overige deelnemers kregen van de wedstrijdleiding een extra herkansing. Dat zorgde voor geen verschuivingen meer.

David Malukas, Romain Grosjean, kampioenschapsleider Alex Palou, O'Ward, McLaughlin en Colton Herta gingen uitvechten wie als eerste mag starten vanavond 18:30 uur Nederlandse tijd. Na wat stuivertje wisselen begon McLaughlin op het end van de kwalificatie aan een onverslaanbare ronde in de Fast Six. Elke rijder beet zich daarna op de Nieuw-Zeelander zijn tijd stuk.

Rinus 'VeeKay' van Kalmthout strandde al in Q1. De problemen bij kwalificaties lijken nog steeds niet opgelost bij Ed Carpenter Racing. De Hoofddorper worstelde zich langs de muren heen en kwam niet verder dan een negentiende tijd en start naast de Indianapolis 500-winnaar van 2022 Marcus Ericsson.

VeeKay was op sociale media kort van stof, maar klonk strijdvaardig. "Start als 19e voor de race van zondag. Er kan veel gebeuren op dit circuit, veel kansen om vooruit te komen!"

Toch wel apart dat maar liefst vier Nieuw Zeelanders meedoen in de Indy car. Dan rijden er ook nog eens twee vooraan in de FE en dan heb je ook nog eens Lawson op de drempel van de Formule 1.

Verder Hartley in de top van de WEC en Shane van Gisbergen die en passant nog even een NASCAR race wint. Nogal een succesvol autosport land op dit moment....

VeeKay gaat toch nergens heen...is dat ECR of is hij zelf gewoon niet goed genoeg? ik kijk het te weinig....maar coureurs kunnen doorgaans meer goedmaken in IndyCars dan in F1....

  zijn teamgenoot, de ervaren Hunter-Raye staat laatste. ECR is niet zo denderend....
  
  Alhoewel ik een beetje twijfels heb over de echte kwaliteiten van Veekay; hij is wel racewinnaar dus hij kan er wel een beetje wat van. Bij hem zie ik echter niet veel progressie maar bij ECR zie ik absoluut achteruitgang.

  hmmmm moet ie dus een nieuw stoeltje vinden....heb het idee dat hij een hele nette jongen is en ECR dus loyaal blijft omdat ze hem dat stoeltje in de eerste plaats hebben gegeven....maar goed, moeten de aanbiedingen er wel zijn...

  ECR is al 2 jaar bagger, ik volg elke wedstrijd, maar dat hok, daar kun je niks mee bereiken, wegwezen daar dus !

  Het lijkt erop alsof Rinus inmiddels wat ervaring op heeft gedaan in het middenveld. Dat hij thuisbrengen op P12 is prima.
  
  Daly (die overigens alleen een beetje bij kon blijven op de Ovals), Carpenter (die sowieso te traag is) en Hunter Rest (veel ervaring, maar geen pure snelheid meer), verslaat hij met speels gemak.
  
  Ik twijfel ook wel wat over de capaciteiten van Rinus, maar hij zou het verdienen om een jaartje in een beter team te rijden. Al is het alleen maar om te zien hoe hij het zou doen tegen Grosjean, Rossi, McLaughlin, Power, New garden, Rosenqvist of een andere coureur die wel af en toe kan shinen door simpelweg een snellere auto die beter op zn banden past.
