'McLaren sleept Palou voor de rechter na contract-rel'

De Spaanse Indycar-coureur Alex Palou zorgde recent voor een enorme rel. Hij besloot namelijk dat hij in 2024 toch niet wil uitkomen voor het team van McLaren terwijl de contracten al rond waren. McLaren en Palou's toenmalige management reageerden teleurgesteld en het lijkt er nu op dat McLaren naar de rechter stapt.

Palou rijdt momenteel in de Indycar voor het team van Chip Ganassi Racing. Vorig jaar leek het erop dat hij dit team ging verlaten en in 2023 voor McLaren ging rijden in dezelfde klasse. Na lang gesteggel besloot hij toch bij Ganassi te blijven, maar zou hij in 2024 naar McLaren trekken. Hij besloot dit contract dus op te zeggen en zijn toekomstplannen zijn vooralsnog onduidelijk, zelfs een overstap naar de Formule 1 wordt niet uitgesloten.

Het team van McLaren neemt nu maatregelen, zo meldt de IndyStar. Volgens het medium heeft McLaren namelijk een zaak aangespannen tegen Palou en het moederbedrijf van Chip Ganassi Racing. Ze hebben verschillende rechtszaken aangespannen in het Verenigd Koninkrijk. De rechtszaken zullen niet gaan draaien over dat Palou zich aan het contract moet houden. Volgens de IndyStar gaan de zaken vooral geld, McLaren eist een flinke hoeveelheid geldt van Palou en het team van Chip Ganassi Racing.

      Hij lijkt in ieder geval fratsen uit te halen waarmee hij de schijn opwekt uiterst onbetrouwbaar te zijn. Dat lijkt me niet goed voor zijn toekomst in welke klasse dan ook, in het bijzonder de Formule 1, waarin investeringen in coureurs van een ander kaliber zijn dan in Indycar en men dus mogelijk terughoudend zal zijn in het binnen hengelen van deze gast, die het bovendien nog nooit heeft laten zien tegen échte topcoureurs. Zijn erelijst is (op Indycar na) namelijk niet bepaald indrukwekkend, wat ook weer genoeg zegt over het niveau in de Indycar. Alles wat hier faalt weet daar te winnen.

    Hier komt weinig uit. In elk contract zal opgenomen zijn dat als er een andere optie waarbij het sportief en/of financieel een grote vooruitgang is dan zal het huidige contract ontbonden worden. Zo werkt dat nu eenmaal. Er zal ook iets van een afkoopsom in zitten.

    Het is meer de vraag of die afkoopsom geldig is of de hoogte nog klopt en nog relevant is. Bijvoorbeeld is de afkoopsom alleen geldig voor een ander IndyCar team, als hij naar de f1 gaat is hii geen concurrentie meer voor andere teams. En dan kan bijvoorbeeld een afkoopsom als niet relevant beschouwd worden. Als er een rechtzaak komt zal de focus daarop liggen.
