Vandoorne pakt eerste overwinning in Super Formula

Een week na de bevestiging als racecoureur in 2017 bij McLaren-Honda, heeft Stoffel Vandoorne ook zijn eerste overwinning in de Japanse Super Formula te pakken. De Belg startte de race als derde op het circuit van Okoyama, pakte meteen de leiding en reed op dominante wijze naar de overwinning.

Vandoorne kreeg bij de start al een cadeau, nadat voormalig Williams-coureur Kazuki Nakajima zijn motor af liet slaan bij de start en achteraan moest starten. Nakajima startte de race van pole en de druk werd kennelijk te hoog: het leverde de Japanner uiteindelijk geen sterk resultaat op. Vandoorne sloeg bij de start meteen zijn slag door Yuji Konimoto te verschalken.

In de race over 28 ronden domineerde Vandoorne zoals hij dat deed in GP2. Geen moment kwam zijn overwinning in gevaar. Konimoto werd tweede, voor voormalig Jordan - en HRT-coureur Narain Karthikeyan.. De tweede race van het weekend wordt morgen verreden. Over zes weken is de seizoensfinale op Suzuka, tussendoor rijdt het circus nog een race op het circuit van Sugo. Door zijn overwinning is Vandoorne nu vijfde in de tussenstand van het kampioenschap.
