Officieël: Chris van der Drift maakt komend weekend al comeback

Chris van der Drift zal komend weekend zijn terugkeer maken in de racerij. De in Nieuw-Zeeland geboren Nederlander maakte begin augustus een huiveringwekkende crash mee in Brands Hatch, maar Van der Drift is zodanig hersteld dat hij dit weekend al zijn comeback kan maken in de Superleague Formula.

Van der Drift crashte op 1 augustus met 252 kilometer per uur op de auto van AS Roma en werd daarbij gelanceerd. De coureur van Olympiacos kwam tijdens zijn vlucht in aanraking met een brug die over het circuit loopt en van zijn bolide was weinig meer over. Ruim tweeënhalve maand na zijn harde crash zal Van der Drift al zijn terugkeer maken.

Van der Drift kende een bijzondere weg in zijn revalidatie. "Hierbij klim je voor drie minuten een vriezer in waar het 140 graden onder nul is", vertelde Van der Drift. "Je draagt op dat moment alleen maar twee paar sokken, twee onderbroeken en drie paar handschoenen. Ik ontmoette nog iemand anders die ook deze therapie deed en op een gegeven moment deden we een wedstrijdje die er het langste in kon blijven. Soms stonden we er zelfs vier minuten in! Maar deze manier van revalideren heeft mij echt geholpen sneller te genezen."

Van der Drift zal dus komend weekend, wanneer de laatste races van het Superleague-seizoen worden verreden, zijn terugkeer maken. "Het waren enkele lastige maanden, maar ik weet zeker dat ik net zo snel zal zijn als voor mijn ongeluk op Brands Hatch. Direct na het incident had ik verwacht wel weer snel in de auto te kunnen zitten, maar daarna realiseerde ik me pas de ernst van de crash. Ik ben dan ook wel verbaasd hoe snel ik hersteld ben."

"Ik zal zeker niet achteraan het veld rijden bij mijn comeback en gewoon weer snel zijn. Het zou mooi zijn om op het podium te komen en de Super Final te mogen rijden."

Theoretisch maakt Olympiacos nog een kans op de titel dit seizoen, naast AC Milan (Yelmer Buurman), Tottenham Hotspur (Craig Dolby), FC Basel (Max Wissel) en leider Davide Rigon (RSC Anderlecht).
