Ticktum goed van start in eerste vrije training Super Formula-seizoen

Voormalig GP3-coureur en Japans Formule 3-kampioen Alex Palou was de snelste tijdens de eerste vrije training van het nieuwe Super Formula-seizoen dat dit weekend van start gaat op Suzuka.

Palou was met een tijd van 1:38.095 slechts 0.079 seconden sneller dan Yuhi Sekiguchi. In een poging om sneller te gaan spinde de Nakajima Racing-coureur bij Degner en daardoor kwam de rode vlag uit. Het was de tweede keer tijdens deze sessie dat de rode vlag uitkwam, ongeveer een kwartier eerder spinde Kazuya Oshima in dezelfde bocht.

De verrassingen van de sessie waren Daniel Ticktum, Harrison Newey en Lucas Auer. Ticktum reed voor het team dat in 2018 kampioen werd de derde tijd. De Brit was 0.374 seconden langzamer dan Palao. Harrisson Newey (zoon van Adrian Newey) liet een keurige vijfde tijd noteren, Lucas Auer was achtste. De achterstand van beide coureurs lag binnen de seconde.

Tegenvallers van de sessie waren Nick Cassidy, die bijna anderhalve seconde mocht toegeven en Nirei Fukuzumi. Vooral voor Fukuzumi is een goed jaar in de Super Formula belangrijk, Honda ziet hem als Japanse-coureur graag toetreden tot de Formule 1. De Dandelion-coureur gaf met een tijd van 1:39.708 ruim 1.6 seconden toe.

Niet bepaald een veld om warm voor te lopen. Ticktum zou toch met 2 vingers in de neus 2de moeten kunnen worden in het kampioenschap.
Voor mij hoeft hij niet in de F1 te komen trouwens. Is gewoon overgekwalificeerd. Dat werd mij vooral duidelijk afgelopen winter.
