Sergey Sirotkin maakt huidig WEC-seizoen af bij SMP Racing

Sergey Sirotkin heeft redelijk snel een nieuwe klus gevonden om zijn carrière mee voort te zetten. De Rus raakte eind 2018 zijn zitje in de Formule 1 bij Williams kwijt, maar hij mag de laatste drie WEC-races rijden voor SMP Racing. Op Sebring, Spa-Francorchamps en Le Mans vervangt hij Jenson Button.

Sirotkin, die ook al getest heeft in een DTM-auto, zat na afloop van de Grand Prix van Abu Dhabi zonder stoeltje in de Formule 1. Desondanks besloot hij al snel te kijken naar alternatieven. Voor SMP zal hij de resterende ronden op Sebring, Spa-Francorchamps en de 24 uur van Le Mans rijden als teamgenoot van Egor Orudzhev en Stephane Sarrazin. Dat maakte het Russische team bekend op Twitter.

"Ik ben erg blij dat ik de eer heb om de Russische vlag te mogen verdedigen met een prototype van Russische makelij. De BR Engineering BR01 is een toffe auto en ik kijk er naar uit om er in te rijden als onderdeel van het WEC. Wij hebben uitstekende line-ups en uitstekende auto's. Ik ben er zeker van dat we kunnen strijden voor een overwinning, waaronder de 24 uur van Le Mans", vertelde Sirotkin na zijn aanstelling.

Sirotkin vervangt Jenson Button niet. Sirotkin rijdt in wagen nr 17 en Button
rijdt in wagen nr 11. Er is nog geen vervanger voor Button, die weer
in de Super GT gaat rijden.

  Dat van Button kwam ik daardoor toevallig achter.
