Toyota blijft WEC ook in laatste seizoen met huidige reglementen trouw

Toyota blijft ook in het seizoen 2019/2020 actief in het World Endurance Championship. De Japanse fabrikant is daardoor ook actief in het laatste seizoen dat de klasse met de huidige reglementen rijdt.

Toyota was een van de fabrikanten die in 2012 aan de start stonden van het eerste WEC-seizoen. Destijds streed ook Audi nog mee in het kampioenschap voor langeafstandsraces, later kreeg het ook tegenstand van Porsche. Sinds 2018 is Toyota echter de enige fabrikant die nog actief is in het WEC. In 2014 won Toyota het constructeurskampioenschap, op een zege tijdens de 24 uur van Le Mans moest gewacht worden tot de afgelopen editie.

Het WEC maakt in 2019/2020 voor het laatst gebruik van de huidige reglementen en dus is het niet geheel verrassend dat Toyota zich wederom ingeschreven heeft. Of het team na dat seizoen actief blijft in de klasse, valt nog te bezien. Dan stapt de klasse over op het 'hypercar-reglement', met het doel meer fabrikanten aan te trekken.

Toyota heeft nog geen uitspraken gedaan over welke coureurs het team gaan vertegenwoordigen in het volgende seizoen. In het huidige seizoen wordt de bolide met nummer 7 bestuurd door Mike Conway, Kamui Kobayashi en José Maria López. Fernando Alonso, Sébastien Buemi en Kazuki Nakajima zijn de coureurs van de auto met startnummer 8. Of zij volgend seizoen mogen aanblijven, is dus nog niet bekend.
