Viscaal aan vooravond van WEC-debuut: "Ik sta te trappelen"

Voormalig F2-coureur Bent Viscaal maakt dit weekend zijn debuut in het World Endurance Championship op het legendarische circuit van Spa-Francorchamps. De Tukker komt uit in de LMP2-klasse voor ARC Bratislava en hij blikt alvast vooruit op wat komen gaat.

"Ik sta te trappelen van ongeduld”, laat Viscaal vanuit de Ardennen optekenen. “Het is speciaal om te debuteren in een officieel wereldkampioenschap. Mijn ELMS-debuut is zeer goed bevallen en het is geweldig dat ik meteen aan het wereldkampioenschap mag deelnemen. Gisteren (woensdag) heb ik mijn zitje gepast en de teamkleding is me zojuist aangereikt, het is allemaal erg snel gegaan. Desalniettemin heb ik me goed kunnen voorbereiden. Bovendien was de reistijd ditmaal ook niet al te lang!"

“Wat betreft het materiaal weet ik ongeveer wat ik kan verwachten, omdat mijn ELMS-werkgever Algarve Pro Racing met dezelfde bolide, dezelfde motor en zelfs dezelfde soort banden rondrijdt als dat ARC Bratislava doet. Deze wedstrijd is iets langer dan de ELMS-race die ik laatst heb gereden, maar dat zal geen probleem vormen. In de winterpauze heb ik immers deelgenomen aan een virtuele 24-uursrace, welke volgens mijn collega’s qua concentratie bijzonder goed vergelijkbaar aan het echte werk was.”

“De 6 uren van Spa-Francorchamps vormen een ideale voorbereiding op de 24 uur van Le Mans, waaraan ik over vijf weken mag deelnemen. Dat ik straks op het Circuit de la Sarthe mag rijden is een jongensdroom die uitkomt en om daar een goede indruk achter te laten, zal ik dit weekend alle informatie die ik voorhanden krijg als een spons opzuigen. Miro (Konopka) is één van de beste bronzen rijders van het veld en Tijmen lijkt zich behoorlijk thuis te voelen in het endurancewereldje, dus ik maak mij niet teveel zorgen. Alles wat rest is de voet die op het gaspedaal mag drukken. Ik heb er zin in!”, besluit Viscaal strijdlustig.

De eerste training voor de 6 uren van Spa-Francorchamps begint vanmiddag (donderdag) om 15.30 uur. Vrijdagavond hebben de LMP2-bolides tussen 18.40 en 18.50 uur tien minuutjes de tijd om te kwalificeren, waarop de race zaterdagmiddag om 13.00 uur in gang wordt gezet.
