Giovinazzi benoemd tot Hypercar-coureur van Ferrari WEC-team

Het team van Ferrari rijdt aankomend seizoen niet alleen in de Formule 1, maar ook in de het WEC. De Italiaanse renstal keert na tientallen jaren terug in de topklasse van de enduranceracerij en gaat op jacht naar een nieuwe zege in de 24 uur van Le Mans. Ferrari maakte gisteren de line-up bekend voor het Hypercar-programma.

Ferrari zet aankomend seizoen twee auto's in, in het World Endurance Championship. De Ferrari 499P werd al geruime tijd aan het publiek getoond maar de coureurs waren nog even geheim. Nu is duidelijk geworden wie er achter het stuur gaan kruipen van de twee hypercars. In de wagen met startnummer 50 nemen Antonio Fuoco, Miguel Molina en Nicklas Nielsen plaats achter het stuur.

De Ferrari 499P met startnummer 51 heeft een zeer opvallende line-up. Naast Alessandro Pier Guidi en James Calado neemt namelijk ook Antonio Giovinazzi plaats in de wagen. De Italiaan was in de afgelopen jaren actief in de Formule 1 voor het team van Alfa Romeo, tevens is hij al jaren onderdeel van de Ferrari-familie. Vorig jaar fungeerde hij als Ferrari-reserve en reed hij in de Formule E. Nu mag hij dus plaats nemen in de hypercar van Ferrari en rijdt hij voor het eerst in een klasse als fabriekscoureur van Ferrari.

Leuk dat Fuoco ook weer een mooi zitje krijgt in de autosport. Die jongen was ik eigenlijk al weer helemaal uit het oog verloren. Vroeger werd hij gezien als groot talent dat jaren in het Ferrari junior programma zat, maar uiteindelijk heeft hij dat niet kunnen waarmaken.
Hij reed samen met Verstappen in 2014 in de Florida Winter Series en deed dat toen goed.

Na gisteren, onsterfelijk geworden in Italië. En ik ben blij voor hem. Pier Guidi al evenzeer maar die blijft graag low profile. Of dat nog gaat lukken? En ik wil natuurlijk Calado even hartelijk feliciteren. Het was epic... Alle lof voor Ferrari AF Corse!
