Puzzelen is in tijden van lockdown waarin menigeen al dan niet noodgedwongen voornamelijk thuis doorbrengt een populair tijdverdrijf. Op de burelen van de internationale autosportbond FIA en de Formule 1-leiding doen ze niet anders, maar dan met de invulling van de autosportkalender in zijn algemeen en de Formule 1-kalender in het bijzonder. Want hoe moeten ze al die uitgestelde evenementen inhalen?

De Formule 1 had voor 2020 een recordaantal van tweeëntwintig Grands Prix op de planning staan. Daarvan zijn er inmiddels al acht gesneuveld; Australië, Bahrein, China, Vietnam, Nederland, Spanje, Monaco en Azerbeidzjan. Van die acht heeft de organisatie in Monte Carlo al laten weten dat het evenement dit jaar helemaal geen doorgang kan vinden. Verder is alleen de Australische Grand Prix echt geannuleerd, aan de vooravond van de eerste vrije trainingen.

Verder is vooral sprake van uitgestelde races. Van uitstel komt afstel, is niet voor niks een gezegde, maar Formule 1-baas Chase Carey hoopt nog altijd een seizoen bestaande uit vijftien tot achttien Grands Prix samen te stellen. De teams tonen zich daartoe ook bereid. Zo gaf Ferrari-teambaas Mattia Binotto aan open te staan om het seizoen door te laten lopen tot in januari 2021. En de verplichte zomerstop is al naar maart en april verschoven om ruimte te creëren in augustus.

Er zijn dus mogelijkheden om races in te halen, maar ook volop obstakels en vragen. De eerste vraag die boven de Formule 1 hangt is of het seizoen daadwerkelijk op 14 juni in Canada van start kan gaan. De uitbraak van het coronavirus is nog allerminst beteugeld en her en der over de wereld gelden in meer of mindere mate restricties voor grote evenementen.

Oud-coureur David Coulthard opperde al om races zonder publiek af te werken. Geen gekke gedachte; in tegenstelling tot bijvoorbeeld voetbal is de Formule 1 minder afhankelijk van de sfeer waar toeschouwers voor zorgen. Natuurlijk zijn de beelden van hordes feestende Max Verstappen-fans de afgelopen jaren de wereld over gegaan, maar gejuich of verontwaardiging om acties op de baan wordt al gauw overstemd door het geluid van de motoren. En door te racen komen de inkomsten voor de teams weer op gang.

Stel dat de Canadese Grand Prix inderdaad de opening van het seizoen is, eventueel zonder publiek. En dat alle overige dertien races op de kalender blijven staan zoals ze staan - dus ook het evenement in brandhaard Italië. Hoe komt de kalender er dan verder uit te zien? Welke races worden nog ingehaald en wanneer? Alle geldende restricties moeten overboord.

Zo zou het logistiek logisch zijn om een Grand Prix van Nederland in te halen vlak voor de Belgische Grand Prix, hoewel ze daar in Spa vast niet om staan te juichen. Echter, Jan Lammers vroeg zich tegenover RTL GP hardop af of je een Grand Prix nog wel moet willen dit jaar. Niet alleen wordt Zandvoort in augustus overspoeld door toeristen en zal het een opgave zijn om het Formule 1-circus en alle fans in de omgeving te herbergen, ook acht de racedirecteur het onder de huidige omstandigheden 'niet wenselijk'.

Azerbeidzjan en Vietnam hebben als stratencircuits andere hindernissen te nemen. Kunnen zij de baan op een eventuele nieuwe datum weer afsluiten? Hoe zit het met de vergunningen en de op- en afbouw van het circuit, de tribunes en de paddock? Allemaal vragen waar FIA-president Jean Todt en Chase Carey hun brein over breken. Hier alvast een opzetje van hoe de Formule 1-kalender eruit kan komen te zien, zonder dat daar enige zekerheid over is.

Mijn idee is de races waar nu een streep door staat die gewoon te laten vervallen. Gezien er dit jaar 22 races zouden zijn vind ik dat je er minimaal 11 door moet kunnen laten gaan, desnoods zonder publiek om nog enigszins van een volwaardig seizoen te kunnen spreken. Het seizoen gewoon laten eindigen in december en volgend jaar opnieuw proberen. Lukt dat niet, minimaal 11 races omdat het virus dat niet toelaat? Zet dan maar een streep door 2020 en begin maart volgend jaar opnieuw aan dit jaar... Een seizoen door laten lopen tot januari lijkt me voor zowel de fans als de teams en medewerkers niet wenselijk. Denk ik???
