Nieuwe auto gebaseerd op Ferrari F2007

De nieuwe auto voor de A1 Grand Prix zal gebaseerd worden op de huidige Formule 1-auto van Ferrari. De organisatie van de raceklasse en het Italiaanse sportautomerk kwamen al overeen dat Ferrari de komende negen jaar motoren gaat leveren. Bovendien mag Maranello meedenken en adviseren over het chassis van de nieuwe auto die vanaf volgend seizoen ingezet moet gaan worden.

De auto waarmee Kimi Raikkonen en Felipe Massa dit jaar voor Ferrari reden vormt dus de basis voor de nieuwe A1 Grand Prix-bolide voor 2008/2009. Bovendien worden de motoren een stuk krachtiger. A1 Grand Prix-baas Tony Teixeira: Als Ferrari ons een motor kan leveren van rond de 650, 700 pk in een auto die slechts een paar seconden van de Formule 1 afzit zal de interesse in onze raceklasse toenemen. Dan wil iedereen wel voor zijn land uitkomen, omdat je dan weet dat je het beste materiaal krijgt.

De schatrijke Zuid-Afrikaan vreest door de nieuwe overeenkomst met Ferrari ook niet voor de toekomst van de A1 Grand Prix. Die discussie over onze toekomst moet maar eens ophouden. Daarom is deze samenwerking zo mooi, Ferrari stapt echt niet ergens in waarin ze geen toekomst zien, aldus Teixeira.
