Nieuw-Zeeland verdringt Zwitserland van de kop

Team Nieuw-Zeeland heeft Team Zwitserland afgelost als koploper in het A1 Grand Prix-kampioenschap. Jonny Reid won in zijn eigen land op het circuit van Taupo de sprintrace en werd in de hoofdrace vierde. Dat was genoeg om het zwalkende Zwitserland voorbij te gaan in het klassement.

Neel Jani maakte er namelijk een potje van in Nieuw-Zeeland. Een valse start, botsingen met Team Maleisië en Team Pakistan en diverse drive-through penaltys zorgden ervoor dat Zwitserland geen enkel punt scoorde.

Voor Team Nederland was het een redelijk weekend, al zat er misschien meer in. Niet in de sprintrace, een vijfde plek was daarin het maximale voor Jeroen Bleekemolen. De hoofdrace begon echter voortvarend. Bleekemolen had een bliksemstart en klom van de achtste naar de vierde plek. Hij reed zelfs lange tijd derde doordat Team Zwitserland bestraft werd voor een valse start. Bleekemolen kon die plek echter niet vasthouden door eerst een spin van de baan en daarna een langzame pitstop.

De winst in de hoofdrace ging naar Team Duitsland dat met Christian Vietoris de jongste winnaar uit de geschiedenis van de A1 Grand Prix levert.
