Zwitserland topt de ranglijst in China, Doornbos vijfde

Op het Chinese circuit van Chengdu heeft het A1GP-team van Zwitserland de snelste tijd laten noteren. Coureur Neel Jani reed zijn bolide naar de eerste plaats, die lang in handen was van de Fransman Nicolas Prost. De Zwitser reed een 1:16.349 en was daarmee bijna een tiende sneller dan Prost. Twee tiende daarachter eindigde Robert Doornbos voor Team Nederland op plaats vijf. Chris van der Drift reed voor het team van Nieuw-Zeeland naar plaats veertien, Ho Pin Tung staat met China zeventiende.

Voor Jani was het de eerste kennismaking met het Chinese circuit. Het is erg hobbelig en vies, dus iedereen was op zoek naar grip. Daarvoor moest je soms van de ideale lijn af. Veel coureurs nemen de bochten op verschillende manieren. Dit zal ook een van de lastigste A1GP-races tot nu toe worden, omdat op die verraderlijke hobbels een fout snel gemaakt is. Daarom gaan we tijdens de kwalificatie niet zozeer voor snelheid, maar voor zekerheid.

Voormalig Formule 1-coureur Narain Karthikeyan, die in de ochtendsessie nog de snelste was, staat met Team India derde. Vlak daarachter eindigde Christian Zaugg voor Team Zuid-Afrika. Marco Andretti zette de wagen van Team USA in zijn eerste A1GP-weekend keurig op de achtste plaats. De teams van India, Groot-Brittannie en de Verenigde Staten kregen vandaag twee uur extra de tijd om de goede set-up te vinden. Zaterdag krijgt Team Mexico twee uur extra.
