Neel Jani wint sprintrace, Bleekemolen zesde

Neel Jani en Team Zwitserland hebben ervoor gezorgd dat er in vijf wedstrijden evenzoveel verschillende winnaars te bewonderen zijn. De Zwitser pakt een dominante overwinning in het snikhete Sepang; hij moet alleen de leiding even afstaan tijdens zijn pitstop.

Achter Jani is het Frankrijk (Loic Duval) en Nieuw-Zeeland (Earl Bamber) die het podium completeren. Aanvankelijk verslaat Bamber Duval voor de tweede plek, maar de jonge Nieuw-Zeelander laat hem voorbij om aan een straf te ontkomen.

Filipe Albuquerque van Portugal wordt eenzaam vierde, voor Adam Carroll van Ierland en Jeroen Bleekemolen. De Nederlander profiteerde van een afwijkende strategie door twee ronden langer buiten te blijven voor zijn pitstop.

De rollende start van de race werd een half uur uitgesteld, omdat enkele coureurs al voor de officiële start met elkaar in aanraking kwamen. Bij het uitkomen van de laatste bocht verkijken Marco Andretti (USA) en Felipe Guimaraes (Brazilië) zich op Narain Karthikeyan. Danny Watts van Groot-Brittannië kent een lastige race. Hij blijft staan bij de start door een haperende versnellingsbak en rijdt langzaam terug naar de pits. Daar vervangt het team de ECU waardoor Watts nog voor een paar ronden de baan op kan. Hij finisht uiteindelijk als laatste op zeven ronden achterstand.
