Ierland wint sprintrace, Doornbos derde

Ierland heeft de sprintrace van de A1 Grand Prix in Nieuw-Zeeland gewonnen. Robert Doornbos eindigde tijdens de sprintrace als derde en mocht voor de tweede keer dit seizoen naar het podium.

De sprintrace ging niet zoals gebruikelijk met een rollende start van start, maar met een stilstaande start. De organisatie besloot dit te doen omdat de kans op ongelukken op de smalle baan te groot bleek te zijn.

Adam Carroll van team Ierland verzilverde zijn pole position terwijl ook Doornbos en Felipe Albuquerque hun tweede en derde positie behielden. Bij de pitstop verloor team Nederland de tweede plaats aan Neel Jani van Zwitserland. Achteraf bleek dat Doornbos een probleem met de koppeling had. Voor Albuquerque van Portugal verliep de pitstop nog dramatischer. De Portugees viel vanaf de derde plek terug naar de zevende positie. Later pakte Albuquerque nog de zesde plaats af van Edoardo Piscopo van Italië.

Ierland wint de race voor Zwitserland en Nederland. Achter de top drie eindigen Frankrijk, Nieuw-Zeeland, Portugal, Italië en Maleisië in de punten. India en Zuid-Afrika completeren de top tien.
