Yoong pakt pole position in Mexico

Team Maleisië heeft met overmacht de pole position bemachtigd in Mexico-City. Alex Yoong was na de vier sessies maar liefst acht tienden van een seconde sneller dan debutant Christian Vietoris van Team Duitsland. De 17-jarige Duitser en vervanger van Nico Hulkenberg was daarmee de enige binnen een seconde van de pole.

Alex Yoong speelde in de vrije training verstoppertje met Nieuw Zeeland en Engeland die de trainingen domineerden, maar in de kwalificatie was niemand opgewassen tegen de tijden van de Maleisische ex Formule 1-coureur. Yoong dook als eerste onder de 1:27, wat even later ook gedaan werd door Vietoris, maar dit was niet genoeg om Yoong te kunnen bedreigen.

Oliver Jarvis vocht een hard duel uit met Vietoris maar kwam uiteindelijk drie tienden tekort en start vanaf plaats drie. Op achterstand wordt thuisrijder Salvador Duran vierde, een plek met perspectieven op een mooi resultaat voor eigen publiek. De rest van de top tien zat erg dicht bij elkaar. Frankrijk wordt vijfde en Portugal zesde. Champ Car-ster Bruno Junqueira start als zevende voor Brazilië, gevolgd door Amerika, Australië en Italië.

Team Nederland met debutant Renger van der Zande kon na een uitstekende tweede tijd in de afsluitende vrije training geen vuist maken en werd zestiende. De Nederlander reed zijn tijd al in de eerste sessie en zag geen kans deze nog te verbeteren.
