Yoong wint overtuigend sprintrace in Mexico

Team Maleisië heeft overtuigend de sprintrace in Mexico-City gewonnen. Alex Yoong scoorde daarmee zijn derde overwinning in de A1 Grand Prix dit seizoen na eerder beide races in het Tsjechische Brno op zijn naam geschreven te hebben. De Brit Oliver Jarvis eindigt op twee seconden achterstand als tweede. De laatste podiumplaats is voor Ian Dyk van Team Australie, terwijl de rest van de punten worden verdeeld door Zuid-Afrika, Amerika en China, waardoor de race van Ho-Pin Tung redelijk succesvol genoemd kan worden.

Helemaal vlekkeloos ging het echter niet voor iedereen. Brazilië, Mexico en klassementsleider Duitsland waren betrokken bij een startincident en moesten opgeven. Alleen thuisrijder Salvador Duran kon de pits bereiken en na een korte reparatie kon hij de race hervatten. Met succes, want nadien zet hij de snelste ronde neer voor eigen publiek. Ook Frankrijk moet in de tweede ronde de strijd staken. Nieuw-Zeelander Johnny Reid kende problemen die echter wel verholpen konden worden. Daardoor eindigde hij hopeloos in het achterveld. Dit alles was in het voordeel van Nur Ali van Pakistan, die een vijftiende plek wist te scoren slechts vier seconden achter Portugal.

Renger van der Zande maakte bij de start drie plaatsen goed en klom door problemen van anderen op naar een negende plek, maar kon vervolgens Ananda Mikola van Indonesië niet echt aanvallen. Zodoende maakt de Nederlandse coureur zijn racedebuut met een top tien-klassering.

De hoofdrace in Mexico-City start vanavond om 23.00 uur Nederlandse tijd.
