Engeland wint hoofdrace in Mexico

Oliver Jarvis heeft namens Team Engeland de hoofdrace van de A1 Grand Prix in Mexico-City op zijn naam geschreven. De Brit profiteerde bij de start van een slechte start van Alex Yoong en gaf, ondanks flinke druk van de Amerikaan Jonathan Summerton in de slotfase, de leiding niet meer uit handen.

Bij de start van de opwarmronde gaat het al mis voor Alex Yoong. De auto van Team Maleisië heeft een probleem met de krik, maar komt uiteindelijk toch weg voor de opwarmronde. De start gaat echter niet goed en Yoong moet verschillende plekken prijs geven. De winnaar van de start is echter Jeroen Bleekemolen, die vanaf een negende startplaats de goede kant kiest en maar liefst vier plekken wint. Tot grote teleurstelling van de Mexicaanse fans moet hun thuisrijder Salvador Duran opgeven in de pits.

Adrian Zaugg scoort voor Zuid-Afrika de derde plaats, voor Italië, Maleisië, Nieuw-Zeeland en Portugal. De laatste punten worden verdeeld door Australië, Duitsland en China. Voor Ho-Pin Tung dus een punt, ondanks een probleem bij de pitstop. Ian Dyk, de coureur van Australië, pakt drie punten ondanks een blessure aan zijn enkel.

Jeroen Bleekemolen kende uiteindelijk een dramatische race. Hij startte uitstekend maar vervolgens breekt het gebrek aan ervaring op het circuit hem op en kan de Nederlander niet mee in het tempo van de anderen. Tot overmaat van ramp duurt de pitstop veel te lang door een probleem. De Nederlander wordt uiteindelijk teleurstellend zeventiende, nog net binnen een ronde van de winnaar.

De volgende race, de voorlaatste ronde van het kampioenschap, wordt op 15 april verreden op het Shanghai circuit in China.
