Bourdais voor vierde keer op rij kampioen

Sebastien Bourdais heeft de Grand Prix van Australie in Surfers Paradise op zijn naam weten te schrijven. Dankzij de overwinning heeft de Fransman eveneens het kampioenschap in de wacht gesleept.

Sebastien Bourdais schreef in Surfers Paradise geschiedenis door als eerste coureur ooit voor de vierde keer op rij de titel te pakken. Met deze zege won Bourdais zijn dertigste Champ Car-race in zijn carrière.

Bourdias zal volgend jaar niet zijn Champ Car-titel kunnen verdedigen. De Fransman rijdt volgend jaar voor Scuderia Toro Rosso in de Formule 1.

Toen de race begon had thuisrijder Will Power de leiding. Dan Clarke veroorzaakte echter in de zevende ronde een gele vlag-situatie. Iedereen behalve Paul Tracy, Robert Doornbos en Bruno Junqueira maakte een pitstop. Uiteindelijk pakte Bourdias de leiding toen Tracy de pit in dook.

Na de tweede serie pitstops verloor Bourdais de leiding aan Justin Wilson, maar in de vierenveertigste ronde pakte de Fransman via een mooie inhaalactie de leiding terug.

Bourdais stond de leiding niet meer af en won de race en zodoende ook weer de titel. Achter Bourdais eindigde Wilson en Junqueira op het podium. Robert Doornbos pakte met de vierde positie de Rookie of the Year-titel.
