Robert Doornbos blijft met lege handen achter

Robert Doornbos lijkt het kind van de rekening te worden nu de Champ Car en Indy Racing League zijn gefuseerd. De Nederlander debuteerde vorig jaar in de Champ Car, won twee races en pakte de rookie of the year-titel. Maar voor 2008 zit hij nog zonder werkgever en het ziet er niet naar uit dat hij komend seizoen in het fusiekampioenschap actief zal zijn.

In Formule 1 RaceReport vertelt Doornbos: Het zag er eerst nog super uit. Toen ik naar de eerste test ging met Arie Luyendijk was ik nog vol goede moed, maar nu lijkt het erop dat ik het kind van de rekening ben geworden. Ik heb te lang gewacht op Minardi Team USA (wat uiteindelijk besloot niet deel te nemen aan het fusiekampioenschap, red.).

Vervolgens dacht ik rond te zijn met PKV Racing, maar dat stoeltje werd voor mijn neus weggekaapt door Will Power, die een enorm grote sponsor meebrengt. Walker Racing wilde me daarna een contract aanbieden, maar toen gingen ze failliet.

Ik dacht dit jaar kampioen te kunnen worden. Ik heb een geweldig seizoen gedraaid, ben beste debutant geworden en nu sta ik met lege handen. Van Ryan Briscoe en Dan Wheldon heb ik gehoord hoe gevaarlijk het racen op de ovals is. Dan wil ik wel de zekerheid dat ik in een goede auto zit en de kleinere teams kunnen mij dat niet bieden.

Doornbos zegt nog wat opties achter de hand te hebben. Ik reken echter nergens meer op. Als deze opties niks worden, vlieg ik volgende week naar Oostenrijk om te overleggen. Misschien dat ik wat in NASCAR kan doen, aldus de Nederlander in Formule 1 RaceReport.

Jammer dat het zo moet lopen. Het ging zo goed met hem. Nascar moet ie niet gaan doen. V8 Supercars is leuk om te doen maar wel ver van huis. Ik hoop het beste voor hem.

Begrijp niet goed waarom een kleiner team een minder veilige auto heeft dan een groot team, waarom zegt ie niet gewoon dat ie niet voor een kleiner team wil rijden omdat hij daar geen goede resutaten kan scoren, is tenminste eerlijk.
