Robert Doornbos wint Rookie of the Year-kampioenschap

Robert Doornbos is de winnaar van het Rookie of the Year-kampioenschap in de Amerikaanse Champ Car-serie geworden. De Rotterdammer werd in de race in Surfers Paradise vierde, waardoor hij niet mee rin te halen in het kampioenschap voor debutanten. In het algemeen klassement staat Doornbos nog steeds derde. Wel kan de Minardi Team USA-coureur tweede worden in het algemeen klassement.

Doornbos kende tot de race aan toe een lastig weekend. In het begin van de race wist de Rotterdammer zich niet te melden bij de kop van het veld. Maar dankzij een goede strategie wist Doornbos zich nog naar een vierde plek te knokken, waardoor hij zich beste debutant van het seizoen 2007 mag noemen.

Een prima race en een prima strategie. Complimenten aan iedereen binnen het team. Ik heb me echt 110 procent gegeven. Aan het einde van de race hadden we een probleem met de motor waardoor ik vermogen verloor. Anders hadden we weer op het podium gestaan. Ik ben blij met deze punten en met de Rookie of the Year-titel. In Mexico ga ik op jacht naar de tweede plaats in het kampioenschap, aldus Robert Doornbos.
