Samenvoeging Champ Car en IRL dichtbij

Een samenvoeging van de Champ Car en de Indy Racing League (IRL), de twee grote Amerikaanse raceseries met Formule-wagens, is dichterbij dan ooit. Dat meldt IRL-baas Tony George. Volgens hem is een overeenkomst reeds bereikt. De geruchten gaan al langer dat Champ Car en IRL een einde wilden maken aan hun rivaliteit, maar nu lijkt het er dan echt van te komen.

George: Het is dichterbij dan ooit. We weten niet of we de overeenkomst ook daadwerkelijk over de lijn krijgen, maar we geven in ieder geval niet op. Champ Car-baas Kevin Kalkhoven vult zijn collega aan: Beide partijen willen dat dit gaat lukken en we werken er hard aan.

George heeft al gratis Dallara-chassis en Honda-motoren aangeboden aan de Champ Car-teams die zich nu al inschrijven voor de gecombineerde serie. Elk team krijgt ook 1,2 miljoen dollar aan IRL-geld en de Champ Car-races in Long Beach, Edmonton en Surfers Paradise worden aan de IRL-kalender toegevoegd.

De reacties bij de Champ Car-teams zijn gemengd. Newman/Haas/Lanigan mede-eigenaar Paul Newman kan zijn geluk niet op. Het voelt alsof ik ben overleden en in de hemel ben beland. Dit is het beste nieuws dat ik in lange tijd heb gehoord.

De kleinere Champ Car-teams zijn minder euforisch. Conquest Racing-teambaas Eric Bachelart: Ik heb net een miljoen dollar uitgegeven aan een nieuwe auto en allemaal onderdelen. Ik ben wel voor samenvoeging van de twee series, maar dan in 2009.
