Doornbos voorstander van samensmelten Champ Car en IRL

De organisaties van de Champ Car en de Indy Racing League (IRL) praten al een tijdje over het mogelijke samengaan van de twee Amerikaanse raceseries. Robert Doornbos debuteerde vorig jaar in de Champ Car en wilde eerder niks weten van de IRL, maar ziet samensmelting van de twee klasses nu wel zitten. Ik volg het uiteraard op de voet en sta er positief tegenover, aldus de Nederlander.

Hij vervolgt: Ik had me vooraf ingesteld op een tweede seizoen Champ Car. Vorig jaar heb ik de serie, wagen en circuits leren kennen. Dit jaar moet ik daarvan mijn voordeel zien te behalen. Vorig jaar heb ik zeg maar gezaaid, nu is het tijd om te oogsten. Mochten beide series inderdaad samengaan, zal er veel veranderen. Het kampioenschap wordt dan sterker (meer wagens aan de start), beter (meer grote namen), intensiever (meer races) maar vooral veel uitdagender. Ik heb nagenoeg geen ervaring met het rijden op ovals, de wagen, etc. Ik zal het dus moeten benaderen als een tweede rookie year en mijn doelstellingen waarschijnlijk moeten bijschaven.

Dat rijden op ovals zag Doornbos eerst helemaal niet zitten. Dat klopt. Ik ken een paar jongens in de IRL zoals Ryan Briscoe en Kosuke Matsuura die klappers hebben gemaakt die ik liever niet zelf overdoe. Toch heeft een jaartje Amerika mijn gedachten veranderd. Ook mijn contacten met Arie Luyendijk hebben hier ongetwijfeld in meegespeeld. Ik zie het nu toch veel meer als een uitdaging.

Doornbos heeft nog geen contract voor 2008, al is het een publiek geheim dat hij zonder problemen bij Minardi Team USA kan blijven. Andere teams hebben echter ook al interesse getoond. Doornbos: Het klinkt erg cliché, maar we zijn achter de schermen natuurlijk druk bezig. Mijn focus ligt honderd procent op Amerika. Ik heb het daar in 2007 prima naar mijn zin gehad en wil graag verder bouwen op mijn prima debuutjaar.

Omdat ik de lat hoger leg, wil ik wel over een sterk pakket beschikken. Minardi Team USA heeft een streepje voor bij mij, maar ook andere topteams informeren naar mijn diensten. Ik ben dus positief over mijn kansen. Op dit moment zijn alle ogen gericht op wat er uit de gesprekken tussen de Champ Car en IRL uit gaat komen. Gaat Champ Car zelfstandig door of worden beide series samengevoegd? Iedereen, teams en rijders, hebben hun besprekingen daardoor logischerwijs even gepauzeerd.

Ikzelf heb al wel een idee wat ik wil. Daar zijn we dan ook mee bezig. Mocht Champ Car toch zelfstandig doorgaan, wil ik tijdens de volgende collectieve test, de zogenaamde Spring Training op het circuit van Laguna Seca half maart, weer in actie komen. Als de series wel samengaan, moeten we eerst maar eens goed bekijken wat dan de mogelijkheden zijn.
