Dit jaar geen Champ Car op het circuit van Assen

De fusie tussen de Champ Car en de Indy Racing League (IRL) heeft nare gevolgen voor de race op het circuit van Assen. Vorig jaar kwam de Amerikaanse raceklasse voor het eerst naar Nederland, maar in 2008 is er geen ruimte voor een race in Drenthe. De kalender van de nieuwe samengevoegde serie zit al vol.

Een woordvoerder van het circuit van Assen vertelde aan F1Today.nl: Als gevolg van de fusie tussen Champ Car World Series en IRL is er in de kalender van de IRL helaas geen ruimte voor evenementen in Europa. Derhalve zal in 2008 geen Champ Car of IRL-evenement op het TT Circuit Assen georganiseerd worden.

Assen richt zich nu op een nieuwe raceklasse, de Superleague Formula. Op de website van het TT Circuit Assen is te lezen: Er komt in 2008 een nieuw top autosportevenement op het TT Circuit Assen. De gedachten gaan daarbij uit naar de nieuwe klasse Superleague. Dit zegt organisator Bart Rietbergen.

Rietbergen vertelde aan bijna 300 TT-officials dat het in 2008 niet haalbaar is de Indianapolis Racing League (IRL) naar Assen in casu Europa te halen. Voor 2009 zou dit anders kunnen liggen, maar misschien zijn de Superleague autos in de kleuren van Barcelona, Milaan, maar ook PSV, dusdanig interessant dat Rietbergen na 2008 de IRL helemaal niet meer naar het TT Circuit Assen wil halen.
