Minardi Team USA stapt niet in fusiekampioenschap

Minardi team USA neemt dit jaar geen deel aan het fusiekampioenschap van Champ Car en IRL (Indy Racing League, red.). Dat heeft teambaas en eigenaar Paul Stoddart gezegd. Minardi Team USA debuteerde vorig jaar in de Champ Car en won met Robert Doornbos twee races. Stoddart denkt dit jaar niet competitief te kunnen zijn in de nieuwe serie.

Ik heb vaak genoeg in de achterhoede meegedaan om te weten dat ik dat niet meer wil, verklaart de Australiër. Vorig jaar mocht ik proeven van overwinningen en dat smaakte prima, dus nu nemen we een sabbatical en dan zien we daarna wel wat er gebeurt. Realistisch gezien krijgen de Champ Car-teams pas in 2010 een echte kans om competitief mee te doen, want dan wordt de nieuwe auto geïntroduceerd.

Stoddart is wel een voorstander van de fusie, hij denkt alleen niet dat veel Champ Car-renstallen voor 2008 al de oversteek wagen. Wat nu gebeurt is goed voor de autosport in Noord-Amerika, dit moest gewoon gebeuren. Maar zoals altijd in zon situatie zijn er winnaars en verliezers, en alle Champ Car-teams zijn in dit geval verliezers. Newman/Haas/Lanigan zal de stap maken, maar voor de rest zal je weinig Champ Car-teams zien in de nieuwe serie. En niet omdat ze niet willen, maar vier weken voorbereidingstijd is gewoon te kort.

Stoddart verschijnt met Mianrdi Team USA nog wel bij de afscheidsrace van de Champ Car op het circuit van Long Beach. Daar gaan we gewoon plezier maken. Ik wil vooral genieten van dat weekend en het beste maken van de laatste Champ Car-race ooit. Die klasse stond altijd voor plezier en spektakel en het is treurig dat er een einde aan komt. Maar het is geweldig voor Noord-Amerika dat Champ Car en IRL samen zijn gegaan.
