Graham Rahal wint bij debuut in Saint Petersburg

Graham Rahal is met zijn 19 jaar en 93 dagen de jongste winnaar ooit in een grote Formule-klasse geworden. De Newman/Haas/Lanigan-coureur won de tweede race van het IRL IndyCars-kampioenschap op het circuit van Saint Petersburg in Florida. De eerste race op de Homestead-Miami Speedway moest hij laten schieten na een crash in een vrije training.

Ook gisteren ging het niet vlekkeloos voor Rahal, zoon van drievoudig C ART-kampioen Bobby Rahal. De race begon al met tien ronden achter de safety car, zodat de marshalls de plassen die op de baan stonden na een flinke regenbui weg konden vegen. En bijna halverwege de race werd Rahal in de rondte getikt door Will Power.

Het weerhield hem echter niet om na een nieuwe safety car-periode in de slotfase de leiding te nemen en naar de zege te rijden. Mooier dan dit komen ze niet, jubelde Rahal. Ik wist dat we de snelheid hadden en het is prachtig om je eerste race in een nieuwe klasse meteen te winnen.
