De introductie van staande starts bij Champ Car-races laat nog even op zich wachten. Zeker de eerste drie races van dit seizoen zullen nog rollend gestart worden, omdat de afgelopen tests uitwezen dat de staande start nog niet is wat men ervan had gehoopt. Veel coureurs hebben moeite met de nieuwe manier van starten.

Vice-president van de serie, Tony Cotman, legt uit: Het gaat ons om de veiligheid van de coureurs. We moeten de startprocedure nog verder optimaliseren voordat we er echt mee beginnen. We gaan nu hard aan het werk met de teams en de leveranciers om de staande start bij de race in Portland in juni te introduceren.

Een paar coureurs konden wel goed omgaan met de nieuwe manier van wegrijden. Ken Daigle van motorenleverancier Cosworth: Sebastien Bourdais en Paul Tracy hadden het gelijk onder de knie. En ook de jonge Graham Rahall had het gelijk te pakken. De truc is om de motor niet maximaal in de toeren te laten lopen voordat je weg rijdt. Je moet er een paar honderd toeren onder gaan zitten en dan bij het groene licht de koppeling loslaten en plankgas geven.
