Nelson Philippe heeft de hoop om dit jaar aan de start bij de Champ Car te staan opgegeven. De 20-jarige Fransman moet geld meebrengen voor een stoeltje en dat heeft hij niet. Philippe: Jammer genoeg moet ik een zak met geld meebrengen als ik wil racen en dat heb ik gewoon niet. Ik heb geen cent te besteden.

De Fransman reed al 38 races in de Amerikaanse raceklasse en hij won vorig jaar zijn eerste race voor het team van HVM. Hij werd vierde in de stand om het kampioenschap, maar voor het seizoen 2007 krijgt hij vooralsnog geen kans. Philippe moet nu om zich heen kijken of er nog andere mogelijkheden zijn.

Ik ga niet betalen voor een rol als testcoureur. En ik wil ook niet naar de GP2, dat vind ik een stap terug. Ik kijk op dit moment naar elke andere formuleklasse, maar ook de V8 Supercars en Le Mans trekken me nu aan. Daarvoor word ik misschien zelfs wel betaald om in te rijden. Ik wil dolgraag in de Champ Car blijven, maar als ik 2 miljoen dollar moet meebrengen gaat het over. Het is moeilijk om een sponsor te vinden voor een raceklasse die de laatste zes jaar niet zo veel op televisie is geweest, aldus Philippe.
