Doornbos bevestigd bij Minardi Team USA

Het is dan eindelijk officieel, Robert Doornbos rijdt dit jaar in de Amerikaanse Champ Car-serie voor Minardi Team USA. De Nederlander wordt daar herenigd met teambaas Paul Stoddart, de man die hem in 2005 liet debuteren in de Formule 1. Teamgenoot van Doornbos wordt Dan Clarke. De Engelseman reed vorig jaar al in de Champ Car voor het team van HVM. Testcoureur bij het team is een andere bekende van Stoddart, de Hongaar Zsolt Baumgartner.

Voor Doornbos wordt 8 april de dag dat hij debuteert in de Amerikaanse raceklasse. Hij testte al veelvuldig met het team in de afgelopen maanden en het was ook een publiek geheim dat hij bij het team van Stoddart zou gaan racen. Ik verheug me er op om voor Minardi Team USA, Paul Stoddart, Keith Wiggins en de rest van het team te gaan racen. Het mag dan wel een ander team zijn dan toen ik in de Formule 1 debuteerde, het heeft nog wel dezelfde gezellige, familiare sfeer. En daar hou ik van.

Daarnaast is het team gewoon goed en hebben we samen flink wat progressie geboekt tijdens de tests. Dat ik weer eens een heel seizoen kan racen is alleen maar goed voor mij, ik kijk er naar uit. Hopelijk kan ik races winnen en me mengen in de titelstrijd, aldus Doornbos.

De 25-jarige Nederlander zal komend seizoen moeten afrekenen met de twee jaar jongere Clarke. Die geloofde eigenlijk al niet meer in zijn kansen. Ik heb weken gehoopt en gedroomd van deze kans. Ik ben opgelucht dat het toch nog zover is gekomen. Ik heb nog niet met de nieuwe auto gereden, maar ik heb wel goed contact behouden met het team. Ik ben zo goed mogelijk voorbereid op het nieuwe seizoen als ik kon zijn en we gaan er wat moois van maken.
