Conquest bevestigt komst Halliday

Matt Halliday zal minstens de eerste drie races van het nieuwe Champ Car-seizoen van start gaan voor het team van Conquest. De Nieuw-Zeelander testte vorige maand voor het eerst met de auto en maakte zo veel indruk dat hij zondag zijn debuut maakt in Las Vegas. Teambaas Eric Bachelart: Na wat hij liet zien op Laguna Seca was alle twijfel bij mij weg, hem moest ik hebben.

De Belg vervolgt: We hadden het daar erg moeilijk met veel problemen aan de nieuwe auto. Maar Matt ging gewoon in die auto zitten en stampte er alleen maar snelle rondes uit. Dat heb je nodig in deze serie, vertrouwen en talent. Het is niet de eerste keer dat Bachelart Halliday voor zijn team laat rijden. In de Indy Lights-serie in 2001 was dat ook al het geval.

Met de bevestiging van Halliday is het Champ Car-veld vijftien coureurs groot. De bekendmaking van Katherine Legge en Bruno Junqueira als coureurs van Dale Coyne Racing wordt binnenkort verwacht. Daarmee komt het veld op zeventien coureurs.

Volgens de mede-eigenaar van de serie, Kevin Kalkhoven, staan er nog drie coureurs te popelen om bij de vierde race van het seizoen in te stappen. Jan Heylen, Andreas Wirth en Nederlander Nicky Pastorelli zouden genoeg geld meebrengen om in China aan de start te kunnen staan. Daarmee lijken de kansen van Charles Zwolsman op een stoeltje verdwenen. Met Robert Doornbos zal er komende zondag in ieder geval één Nederlander aan de start staan van het nieuwe seizoen.
