Graham Rahal wil winnen bij debuut

Debutant Graham Rahal ziet geen enkele reden waarom hij zijn allereerste Champ Car-race komende zondag in Las Vegas niet gewoon zou kunnen winnen. De zoon van drievoudig Champ Car-kampioen Bobby Rahal rijdt voor het team van Newman/Haas/Lanigan en is daar teamgenoot van een andere drievoudig kampioen, namelijk Sébastien Bourdais. Rahal: Als ik eerlijk ben denk ik wel dat ik kan winnen. Ik zit bij het beste team en daarvoor ben ik toch gekomen.

De pas 18-jarige Amerikaan heeft uitvoerig getest en is klaar voor zijn debuut op het stratencircuit van Las Vegas. Rahal: De auto is vrij zwaar om te besturen en het circuit zal ook wel wat hobbels hebben. Bovendien is het op sommige plaatsen erg nauw, daar moet je dus jezelf wat meer ruimte geven. De sleutel om zondag vooraan te eindigen is slim rijden en geen domme fouten te maken of te snel willen.

Hij krijgt in ieder geval alle lof van de regerend kampioen Bourdais. Hij is goed voorbereid. Hij heeft veel getest en is er klaar voor. Tussen alle andere debutanten zal hij extra opvallen door zijn goede voorbereiding en zijn pure talent, aldus de Fransman. De laatste debutant die zijn eerste race won was Nigel Mansell in 1993.
