Servia vervangt Tracy na zware crash

Oriol Servia vervangt Paul Tracy tijdens de race in Long Beach voor het team van Forsythe. Tracy raakte in de derde vrije training gewond na een zware crash. De Canadees werd naar het ziekenhuis afgevoerd en daar werd een gebroken lendenwervel geconstateerd. Volgens doktoren kan zon blessure betekenen dat Tracy drie maanden aan de kant moet blijven. In dat geval zou hij vier races moeten missen, wat ernstige schade zou kunnen toebrengen aan zijn titelkansen.

Servia begint zijn invalbeurt onvoorbereid. Hij heeft alleen de tweede kwalificatie en een half uur durende warmup om de auto te leren kennen voor hij aan de bak moet tijdens de race. Desondanks bemachtigde Servia een veertiende startplaats binnen een halve seconde van zijn teamgenoot Mario Dominguez. Het is nog niet duidelijk wie Tracy gaat vervangen tijdens de komende races.
