Bourdais verliest pole position aan Power door straf

Will Power start de Champ Car-race in Houston van pole position. De Fransman Sebastian Bourdais had de snelste tijd in handen, maar werd gestraft voor het blokkeren van Power tijdens diens snelle ronde. Bourdais reed op een bepaald deel van de baan langzaam en verpestte daarmee de snelle ronde van Power, vertelt Tony Cotman, vice-president van de Champ Cars.

Hij liet Servia en Wilson erlangs en ging precies voor Power weer terug op de racelijn. Op dat moment was hij drie seconden langzamer dan het normale tempo. In zon geval moet je te allen tijde aan de kant voor snellere deelnemers. Maar ik weet zeker dat Sebastian het niet met me eens is. Ironisch genoeg was het Power die samen met Doornbos de snelle ronde verpestte van Graham Rahal die daar erg boos om was.

Justin Wilson reed zich naar een derde startplaats gevolgd door Jani, Servia, Rahal en Pagenaud, die het hele weekend problemen had met de auto. Alex Tagliani werd ook gestraft maar verloor hiermee geen positie. Hij kwam naast de baan terecht en keerde weer terug op het circuit pal voor een andere deelnemer. Zijn snelste tijd werd afgenomen vanwege gevaarlijk rijgedrag.

Robert Doornbos kende geen gelukkige kwalificatie. Beide autos van het Minardi-team zaten er het hele weekend goed bij en konden het in de kwalificatie niet waarmaken. Beide heren werden geplaagd door verkeer en rode vlaggen. Doornbos start de race pal achter teamgenoot Dan Clarke als dertiende.
