Bourdais ongenaakbaar, Doornbos weer op podium

Sebastien Bourdais heeft op indrukwekkende wijze de race op het circuit van Portland gewonnen. De regerend kampioen haalde daarmee de honderdste overwinning voor het team van Newman/Haas/Lanigan binnen. Justin Wilson vertrok wel van pole position, maar hij kon zijn leidende positie niet vasthouden. De Engelsman werd tweede voor Robert Doornbos, die alweer voor de derde keer in vier races naar het podium mocht.

Wilson liep aan het begin van de race weg, maar na de eerste serie pitstops zette Bourdais de achtervolging in. De drievoudig kampioen reed elke ronde tussen de vijf en acht tienden van een seconde sneller dan zijn opponent. Met de medewerking van een achterligger kon de Fransman naar de achterkant van de auto van Wilson kruipen en hem op het rechte stuk voorbij gaan. Op het einde had Bourdais een voorsprong van 13,5 seconden op zijn naaste belager.

Achter Wilson en Bourdais was er een interessant gevecht gaande voor de laatste podiumplek. Minardi Team USA-coureur Robert Doornbos vocht bijna de gehele race met Will Power en de Nederlander kwam daar uiteindelijk als winnaar uit. Een derde podiumplek voor de Rotterdammer, maar een overwinning zat er nog niet in.

Doornbos: We hebben nu kunnen zien dat als we willen winnen en coureurs als Justin en Sebastien partij willen bieden dat we de auto nog wat moeten verbeteren. Natuurlijk was dit ook goed en ben ik blij met deze derde plek en hebben we het als team hier goed gedaan. Maar ik wil ook winnen en daarvoor moeten we nog een stap maken.
