Zege voor Tracy, Doornbos tweede!

Robert Doornbos heeft op het circuit van Cleveland een passend vervolg gegeven aan zijn toch al geweldige seizoensstart. De Minardi Team USA-coureur reed zich knap naar een tweede plek en hij kwam slechts een halve seconde te kort voor zijn eerste Champ Car-zege. De overwinning ging verrassend naar Paul Tracy die in de kwalificaties en vrije trainingen bij lange na niet de snelste tijden neerzette.

Dat ging echter niet zonder slag of stoot voor de Canadees. Twee keer moest Tracy een pitstop maken voor een nieuwe neus na aanrijdingen met Graham Rahal en Bruno Junqueira. De kampioen van 2003 paste daarop zijn strategie aan en kon zodoende aan het einde van de race de snellere Doornbos net voorblijven. De race van de Nederlander werd ook hevig verstoord door een drive-trough penalty voor blokken bij de start.

Ondertussen ging het voor de mannen op de eerste startrij helemaal mis. Will Power nam aanvankelijk de leiding totdat een lekke band hem ver terugwierp. Sebastien Bourdais vertrok van pole position, maar door een probleem met de oliedruk werd de Fransman twaalfde. Hij leidt nog wel het kampioenschap, maar Doornbos volgt op slechts drie punten.

Aanstaande zondag staat de volgende race al weer op het programma. Strijdtoneel is dan het Canadese circuit van Mont Tremblant.
