Power wint, Doornbos leidt kampioenschap

Will Power heeft eindelijk weer eens een Champ Car-race gewonnen. De coureur van Team Australia won de eerste race van het seizoen, maar stond daarna in de schaduw van Sebastien Bourdais en Robert Doornbos. Op Toronto was het echter weer de beurt aan de Australiër. In wisselende weersomstandigheden finishte Power voor Neel Jani en Justin Wilson.

Door de zege van Power doet hij weer helemaal mee voor het kampioenschap. De twee kemphanen die voor deze race samen aan kop gingen stelden enigszins teleur. Doornbos tikte Bourdais uit de race en moest zelf naar de pits om zijn neus te vervangen. De Nederlander werd nog zesde en leidt nu het kampioenschap in zijn eentje.

Gemengde gevoelens bij de Rotterdammer. Doornbos: Het was een onwijs gekke race. Na de kwalificatie gisteren was het ons doel om zoveel mogelijk punten te scoren en te roeien met de riemen die we hadden. De race begon slecht, maar ik had misschien wel een engeltje op mijn schouders door de crash te ontlopen. Na de herstart kwam ik in mijn ritme, bespaarde brandstof en toen de regen begon te vallen werd ik steeds sneller. Aan het einde van de race reed ik achter Sebastien en zag ik dat hij het moeilijk had. Ik remde in de hairpin op dezelfde plek als de ronden ervoor, maar verloor de auto en raakte hem. Een typisch race-ongeval tijdens zulke condities. Het spijt me, maar het had echt iedereen kunnen overkomen.
