Doornbos indrukwekkend naar zege in San Jose

Robert Doornbos heeft zijn tweede zege van het seizoen binnen. Op het stratencircuit van San Jose kwam de Minardi Team USA-coureur van startplek vijftien en reed op indrukwekkende wijze naar de overwinning. Tweede werd Neel Jani op meer dan zes seconden. Oriol Servia maakte het podium compleet.

En dat terwijl de race voor Doornbos nog moeizaam begon. De Nederlander kwam in aanraking met de Belg Jan Heylen en moest daardoor zijn voorvleugel laten vervangen. De alternatieve strategie, een paar safety car-periodes en goede constante rondetijden hielpen Doornbos de top drie in.

De enige die de snelheid van de Minardi Team USA-coureur kon bijbenen was RSPORTS-coureur Justin Wilson. Die werd echter geramd door de teamgenoot van Doornbos, Dan Clarke. Wilson spendeerde meer dan twintig ronden in de pits voor reparatiewerkzaamheden, maar was geen bedreiging meer voor de verrassende winnaar.

Robert Doornbos na zijn zege: Dit is echt een geweldige manier om een moeilijk weekend en een moeilijke week af te ronden. Dit is een geweldig gevoel en ik hoop dat we deze vorm de rest van het seizoen vast kunnen houden. Deze zege is een enorme motivatieboost voor het team en ik moet alle jongens ook bedanken, want zonder hen had ik het niet gered.
