Bourdais wint eerste race op Zolder

Sebastien Bourdais heeft een grote stap in de richting van zijn vierde Champ Car-titel op een rij gezet. De Fransman won zojuist de allereerste race op het Belgische circuit van Zolder en concurrenten Will Power en Robert Doornbos belandden niet op het podium. Power werd vierde, Doornbos eindigde in zijn Minardi Team USA als zevende.

De verrassende tweede op Zolder werd Dale Coyne Racing-coureur Bruno Junqueira. De Braziliaan verloor bij zijn eerste pitstop veel plekken, maar door een afwijkende strategie keerde hij aan het einde van de race toch terug aan de top. Toen de finishvlag na 71 ronden viel was de opluchting bij zijn team groot, want Junqueira had niet veel brandstof meer over om nog langer door te gaan.

Hij hield het laatste gedeelte van de race ook een grote groep coureurs op om brandstof te sparen. Onder andere Robert Doornbos zat een beetje klem in die groep. De Nederlander was als derde gestart en pakte meteen de tweede plek. Lange tijd reed hij op die positie, tot hij een ronde eerder dan zijn concurrenten een pitstop moest maken. Doornbos zakte terug en eindigde uiteindelijk als zevende. Lokale held Jan Heylen reed dankzij een afwijkende strategie even tweede, maar moest een kwartier voor het einde van de race nog een pitstop maken en viel daardoor terug naar een dertiende stek.
