Seizoenseinde in Phoenix afgelast

De laatste race van het Champ Car-seizoen vindt niet in Phoenix plaats. Op 2 september zouden Robert Doornbos, Sebastien Bourdais en hun collegas het seizoen 2007 moeten afsluiten in de Amerikaanse stad, maar de race die op 2 december verreden moest worden is afgelast. Dit is na de race in China al de tweede wedstrijd die niet doorgaat.

Door het wegvallen van Phoenix wordt Mexico City de nieuwe afsluiter van het jaar. Dat was het Mexicaanse circuit de afgelopen vijf jaar al vier keer. Dit keer leek de eer om het seizoen af te ronden voor Phoenix, maar de droom van organisatoren Dale Jensen en Bradley Yonover valt in duigen. In een verklaring melden ze:

Voor een evenement van deze grootte is veel steun van buitenaf nodig. En hoewel we een paar geweldige partners hebben gevonden is de financiële steun niet voldoende om de race door te laten gaan. Wij willen iedereen die medewerking verleent heeft bedanken en dan met name de stad Phoenix. Jammer genoeg biedt de huidige economische situatie niet de ruimte om het evenement dat wij voor ogen hadden te creëren.

Dit is slecht nieuws voor Robert Doornbos. De Minardi Team USA-coureur staat momenteel tweede in het kampioenschap en hij heeft nu nog maar drie races om de achterstand van 53 punten op Bourdais goed te maken. Komend weekend mag de Nederlander proberen bij zijn thuisrace op het circuit van Assen proberen daar wat vanaf te halen.
